Min weld spacing again

Min weld spacing again

(OP)
I have read the many threads on in weld spacing.

4t between weld toes seems to be a well stated rule of thumb to separate the HAZs. But why should they be separated? If they over lap or get close what happens?

The t4 tee rule is offen broken. E.g reinforced tee pads. SO flange welds.

Does aone know of a paper where some had actually looked at the effect of close HAZs?

The different properties associated with the 3 primary microstructures (austenite, ferrite and martensite)developed over various cooling curves (and later reheats) cause stress concentrations at the interfaces of those microstructures, which can later develop into creep damage, cracking and total joint failure.

This is a good picture relating color and temperatures from wikimedia.org,

Temperature F     And          Color
    400                       Faint Straw
    440                       Straw
    475                       Deep Straw
    520                       Bronze
    540                       Peacock
    590                       Full Blue
    640                       Light Blue

For a description of the microstructures developed with each temperature see this,
