Accoustical Engineer Consultation with Structural Engineer

Accoustical Engineer Consultation with Structural Engineer

Accoustical Engineer Consultation with Structural Engineer

(OP)
We are beginning design on a new 8 story steel framed office structure in Tennessee and the Architect has set up an appointment in a few months for us to coordinate the steel frame with the accoustical engineer.  Silly question, but would anyone happen to know what the accoustical engineer might have to do with the steel frame before i go and ask?

RE: Accoustical Engineer Consultation with Structural Engineer

Noise is transmitted in structures in a variety of ways. One specific concern is that of "flanking" where sound is transmitted through floors into walls or reverse.  Also, some structural systems are designed to mitigate sound transmission, particularly floor to ceiling noises (Hambro floor systems, for instance).  The meeting is probably to coordinate the required sound transmission levels with the structural system.

RE: Accoustical Engineer Consultation with Structural Engineer

Ask the architect for the use of the building, and his concerns of sound transmission as pointed out by Ron. The building, or an certain part of it, would be used as recording studio, indoor theatre, which would require the coordination among the architect, the accoustical engineer, and the structural guys (minor, I guess). Also, is there an out door source, such as busy highway, that produces high level noise, this is obviously another matter may require attention (required barrier and support).

RE: Accoustical Engineer Consultation with Structural Engineer

Accoustical engineers ofter are used for vibration analysis.
