Hydraulic pressure test of heat exchangers

Hydraulic pressure test of heat exchangers

Hydraulic pressure test of heat exchangers

I hope this is the right forum. If not, please direct me to the right one.

I have a large motor with air-to-water heat exchanger where the water flow pressure is 4.5 bar. We intend to overhaul and conduct a pressure test on this cooler to check for any leaks.

What is the recommended test pressure and test duration ? I was informed the test pressure is 1.5 times the rated pressure and the duration is 24 hours (since liquids are compressible and it takes a long time for the pressure to drop due to leaks). Is this right ? Is there any NEMA or other standards for this test ?

The cooler tubes are believed to be cupro-nickle.

1.5X hydro for 30 mins would be more than sufficient to test for leaks.

liquids are not as compressible as you might think - air is much more compressible

pneumatic tests are (in my mind) potentially more destructive to equipment and personnel than hydro tests

Thank you Steven.

I meant to type exactly the opposite - that liquids are not compressible - and missed the 'not'.

Is there any standard or test procedure for this test ?

best bet is to check with your AI.  he will know the Code (State & Industry) that covers you motor's heat xchanger
