That is a new one for me...Wonder how this failure translates to the rest of the Ford line???  
I did have a failure much as you indicate (but offroad on a steep hill at speed) on an old International Scout.  The little rubber connector on the steering shaft failed.

Glad you were going slowly, I already know how it turns out at speed!
