Default corrosion rates for actively corroding carbon steel

Default corrosion rates for actively corroding carbon steel

Default corrosion rates for actively corroding carbon steel

(OP)
I am having trouble finding any default corrosion rates to apply to equipment that was only inspected once for ACTIVELY CORRODING EQUIPMENT, (ex. process piping, pressure vessels, etc. with active corrosion/pitting). I this will not determine acurate life of the equipment, although I want a conservative approach without overkilling the life determination/next inspection. Even where to find it in the codes/standards would help. Thank you.

RE: Default corrosion rates for actively corroding carbon steel

Unless you have any other sort of monitoring going on, you will not get any 'default' rates as you will have a very specific metal environment combination.  What was the predicted corrosion rate from the design?  Comparison of your one inspection result with this value should be your starting point.  API 580 and 581 will guide you.

RE: Default corrosion rates for actively corroding carbon steel

RBI  (Risk Based Inspection) as jones said is the best approach. you'll find a technical module for all the different corrosion types to assess the corrosion rate and define risk and inspection plan.
