Stupid Instructions 2 (first thread closed)

Stupid Instructions 2 (first thread closed)

Stupid Instructions 2 (first thread closed)

(OP)
Remember all those B movies, those old westerns where they talk about "lead poisoning"?

I thought this safety warning in a Henry Rifle manual quite touching, given the US citizen's propensity for litigation:

Quote:

WARNING: DISCHARGING FIREARMS IN POORLY VENTILATED
AREAS, CLEANING FIREARMS OR HANDLING AMMUNITION MAY
RESULT IN EXPOSURE TO LEAD, A SUBSTANCE KNOWN TO CAUSE
BIRTH DEFECTS, REPRODUCTIVE HARM AND OTHER SERIOUS
PHYSICAL INJURY
. HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION AT ALL TIMES.
WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY AFTER EXPOSURE
(my emphasis).

I guess there are healthier substitutes for lead that could be advanced... gold perhaps? I'd suggest silver, but is that just for vampires and lycanthropes?

PS Lycanthropy is one form of Therianthropy ....which I didn't know till today.
Speaking of which, boy oh boy is that Buffy cute or what? Sorry, now I'm rambling (and droolng)... its free association time here without coffee.

In California all kinds of things have 'prop 65' warnings to the point it's virtually meaningless.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_65_(1986)  I wouldn't be surprised if that's where this originated.

Which Buffy, series or film.

If series, early Buffy (hey I was young at the time & in the UK (16 AOC) it's not as bad as it sounds) or later Buffy.

And if the series, I'll take Cordelia any day of the weekwinky smile.

A lot of manufacturers now offer solid copper bullets.  However copper is not as dense, so for a given bullet weight the projectiles are larger (longer) which generally have to be seated deeper into the cartridge, requiring different gunpowders or amount to avoid excessive pressures from the reduced case volume.  But it is doable and being done. There are also totally copper encased lead bullets (generally the bottom of jacketed bullets have exposed lead) that reduce the vapors during firing.

KENAT,

If there is no penalty for posting an unnecessary warning sign, why not just have one at the border(s):

"WARNING: This state contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm."

I actually know a guy who has developed a rubber based bullet that is being used by the US military on practice ranges, specifically to eliminate the lead issues.

RE: Stupid Instructions 2 (first thread closed)

Sompting, it's another 'good idea', approved by the voters that probably didn't work out quite as intended (or at least probably as most voters thought it would).  I like the border/point of entry idea.  When I'm a citizen & can vote maybe I'll suggest itwinky smile.

I saw something about plastic (nylon?)/tungsten bullets being used at some Army training ranges.

I've seen other 'lead substitute' ammo ideas too.  In CA at least the lead in ammo used during hunting  is an issue for the Condors.

Rubber Bullets was a 10cc song from the 1970's that didn't go down well too well in Northern Ireland.

Similarly, the (now retired) Orange slogan: "The future is bright, the future is Orange" wasn't too popular over there with some.

jmw,

I do not find the warning particularly idiotic, particularly given all the other warnings in that manual.  Occasional exposure to lead under those circumstances is probably not a problem.  If you are running a commercial shooting range, you should probably worry about it.

I am somewhat surprised that the pamphlet is not written around Jeff Cooper's four rules.  Having a simple set of basic rules plus a set of secondary rules sounds to me like a better idea.
