Solid Works features for Model Based Definition/Elimination of drawing

Solid Works features for Model Based Definition/Elimination of drawing

(OP)
I put a general question over in GD&T on the topic of MBD however, I'd like to hear from actual users what Solid Works can do in this arena.

We primarily use the other Solid program but some are suggesting we should move to Works and this is one of the first areas my boss wants to look at.  He plans on getting in a vendor to talk to but I'm especially interested in hearing from users.

I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone that actually is doing MBD using SW, especially small or midsized companies that can't strong arm suppliers into necessarily using the same software.

I don't know of anyone that uses SW for MBD. Companies that are required to do MBD have switched to CATIA.

I prefer SW.

I looked into MBD when I was still using SW06, and I think that is when my company got a copy of ASME Y14.4-2003.  I couldn't get GD&T feature frames to activate in a part or model sketch and gave up.  I just now tried in SW08 and ran into the same issue.  I am not sure if SW09 allows it since I am not a user.

KENAT,

It's good to see that your company bigwigs are finally wising up to SW. poke

Seriously though, I know there are/were a couple of 'paperless' MBD users here and/or at the official SW forums, but they are very definitely in the extreme minority.

I have not bothered even experimenting/playing with that function because it has such little chance of becoming mainstream in my lifetime.

Also, seriously, if the PTB are considering a switch just for the MBD side of thingss ... I would seriously be looking for employment in a different assylum.

No offence to SW (If I were picking a 'mid range CAD package' from scratch, it would probably be the first one I'd look at) but I think both the idea of switching given how much legacy stuff we have in the other 'solid' program and the idea of being gung ho on widespread MBD are ridiculous given all other factors.

However, I've already told my boss this and he still wants to spend time looking at it.  Several lead guys in engineering used SW at one of the companies this place aquired some time back and haven't got over the switch.  Every chance they get they bring up the idea of switching.

KENAT,  it seems like you are hijacking your own thread. :)

Switching is a big deal.  It's good to have a criteria.  As you know, that should be flexible.

I don't think the industry is ready for MBD, regardless to the package being used.  Not only does one have to have software that supports it, but then all of the vendors and customers in the supply line then also have to have the that software (or at least something that can see the data in the model).  The big issue being communication, as I think was mentioned in the other thread.

Just for the record, FCF can be added to the model in SolidWorks and I believe they are viewable in the eDrawings format.
