UW 16.1 question

UW 16.1 question

UW 16.1 question

(OP)
Hi All,
I would like to design a Category D weld with weld details per Fig UW-16.1(a). However, this figure does not give me adequate joint preparation details. Infact, the other joint types on this figure also do not give this information. If this not of importance? Can I use any suitable joint preparation? Is it ok to simply compute the resultant stresses based off of the Internal pressure in the nozzle and a stress area based off of the dimension tc shown?
Thanks in advance!

RE: UW 16.1 question

it doesn't give full details???

what details is it missing??

RE: UW 16.1 question

both the angle of the bevel and the root gap are YOUR decisions and your weld procedures.  Although the bevel ange is a non essential variable, it's still what is best for your operation.

Thank you for your prompt response, vesselfab. That answers my first question. Could you please help me on my second question as well? How do I make sure the weld is strong enough. I understand that per UW15(b)(1), no calculations are required, although this is also something I dont understand. Why would no calculations be required to validate that the weld is adequate in strength.
Can I use tc as a throat thickness and use the regular stress = force/area calculation to validate my weld?

RE: UW 16.1 question

ME231,

That's a good question, and perhaps someone on this forum has the answer.

I would follow the calculations as given in UW-16(b) and then perhaps doublecheck with your method of s = f/a.

RE: UW 16.1 question

i don't know what size nozzles you're talking about, but

ug-45(c)
uw-15(c)
ug-41(b)(1)

should be reviewed
