Question about Feature Driven Pattern using Fold/UnFold Sheet Metal

Question about Feature Driven Pattern using Fold/UnFold Sheet Metal

Question about Feature Driven Pattern using Fold/UnFold Sheet Metal

(OP)
I have created a circular sheet metal part and used fold/unfold plus hole wizard to place holes where I would like pins to be placed. The holes aren't in any pattern, they are located strategically to miss other holes. I have tried in an assy to use feature driven pattern to place the pins, but they can only be placed in the unfolded state. When I unsurpress fold the pin does not follow the part, the pin remains in the unfolded state positions. Is there a way to make it follow the folded state holes?

RE: Question about Feature Driven Pattern using Fold/UnFold Sheet Metal

Are you inserting the pins into the SM part or at an assy level?

How are you mating the pin into the seed hole?

Thanks for the reply,

I am inserting the pin at the assy level.

Ahh yes, I can see that my mating would probably have an effect on this. I originally mated the pin in the folded position. I placed a angle, tangent and dist from top of SM part.

I have tried other mates in the folded and unfolded states, but no success from those. Are there tricks or hints that I may have missed?

RE: Question about Feature Driven Pattern using Fold/UnFold Sheet Metal

In the formed state, try to use the Temporary Axis of the hole and axis of the pin, and maybe a tangent from the curved outer surface of the cylinder and shoulder (?) of the pin.

Was there a particular reason for adding the holes in the unfolded state, instead of the formed state?

I tried using the Temporary Axis of the holes but unfortunately in the folded state the Temporary Axis does not show up. It does show up in the unfolded state however.

I added the holes in the unfolded state because the hole pattern is non-uniform and I had a dxf pattern that I just placed on the unfolded state, which made it easier at the time........ If I were to add the holes in the formed state I would either need to have numerous planes or use Instance Skip on way to many holes to get what I wanted unless I am missing/forgetting an easier tool to accomplish this.

How many pins/holes are involved?
Why would you need so many (any) planes?

If the holes are created in the formed state, axial position can be controlled by a dimensions from a face, and radial positions controlled by relations with an upper level sketch with radial lines.

An image or part files would help.

There are 116 holes.
I guess I was looking at doing it differently than what you just mentioned about controlling them from a face and radial positions!

So I have came back to this dillemma.

I am having a brain fart and can't recall which feature would use the axial position being controlled by dimensions from a face, and radial positions controlled by relations with an upper level sketch with radial lines, if I have already created a hole in the formed state. If someone can remind me which feature it is, it would be appreciated!

RE: Question about Feature Driven Pattern using Fold/UnFold Sheet Metal

Edit the first sketch in the Hole Wizard feature, or edit the HW feature and select the Positions tab. Either method has the same result.

Thanks CBL,

I actually used the wrap feature to position the points in the places where I wanted them for hole wizard. I accomplished what I was after, thanks once again.

Cheers!
