Baffle Plate Material for ASME Sec I Boiler

Baffle Plate Material for ASME Sec I Boiler

Baffle Plate Material for ASME Sec I Boiler

(OP)
Dear all,

Appreciate your advice. My HRSG boiler has drum baffle plates made of SS400. The HRSG is designed according to ASME Sec I. When I refer to ASME Sec I, under PG-6 Plate, SS400 is not listed as one of the materials. My question is, am I violating the code when I use that material as my baffle plate?

I am a bit confused because I'm not sure whether the baffle plate material is governed by PG-6. Steam drums, mud drums, yes, but baffle plate? Not too sure.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, SS400 is equivalent to SA-36, isn't it? When I refer to ASME Sec II Part D, SA-36 plate is not permitted under Sec I.

My HRSG's drum pressure is 40 barg.

Thanks all.

RE: Baffle Plate Material for ASME Sec I Boiler

What is SS400? Baffle material may not be considered as pressure retaining. Thus, as long as the baffle material is weldable it can be used as non-pressure retaining material under Code rules.

Thanks metengr for your reply. SS400 is JIS, equivalent to ASTM's SA-36.

Just need a clarification. The baffle plate is not pressure retaining, but isn't the plates subject to pressure, in my case subject to 40 barg? Or is it because the pressure from all sides are the same, thus no differential pressure, hence why it's considered as non-pressure?

When I refer to PG-6.1, "Steel plates for any part of a boiler subject to pressure, whether or not exposed to the fire or products of combustion, shall be of pressure vessel quality in accordance with one of the following specifications:" and so on.

I'm not really good at understanding codes since it's not in plain english, thus sorry for the hassle.

RE: Baffle Plate Material for ASME Sec I Boiler

Baffle plate is NOT a pressure part.

Ok thanks
