Service life of Geotextiles

I am trying to find some information on service life and durability off geotextiles. Any help in this regard will be appreciated very highly.

RE: Service life of Geotextiles

I think you only recourse will be to contact each manufacturer/supplier in turn. Some use carbon black to provide durability, some now apparently do not, each supplier does however have to make an assessment of their durability. Companies like Tensar have extensive research/developmetn/technical departments and in turn this is a major part of what they do.

Buy a copy of one of Robert M. Koerner's geosynthetic books.

RE: Service life of Geotextiles

Depends on the usuage most of them break down from sunlight UV .Nylon lasts longer than the polys but you can get some UV stabilized polys that are not bad. Nylon is still better.

RE: Service life of Geotextiles

Once in the ground, geosynthetics (geotextiles & geogrids) will last pretty much forever, as long as the soil is not biologically or chemically contaminated.  As previously stated, all geosynthetics are suspect to UV degradation.  Industry standards recommend geosynthetics be covered with soil within 14 days of deployment.

That being said there are higher UV packages that can be added to geosyntehtics to increase the UV stability.  There are also materials now being used in wrapped face retaining walls with vegetated facing that will last for the life of the structure, typically 100 year design life.

Check with each manufaturer as not all geosyntehics are created equally.
