Rail Car Pressure Ratings & Tanker Truck Pressure Ratings
Rail Car Pressure Ratings & Tanker Truck Pressure Ratings
(OP)
Hello All,
Because I handle boiler and other ASME issues, I was asked a question today about air unloading chemicals from rail cars and tanker trucks. They asked: "Why aren't those vessels ASME stamped if they operate at 45 psig?"
I'm continuing to investigate, but hoped that someone here has been asked the same question.
Thanks!

RE: Rail Car Pressure Ratings & Tanker Truck Pressure Ratings
The short answer is "because they move"....
ASME (and other codes)cover pressure vessels that are stationary and do not cross state lines.
DOT and other government regulations cover the design and certification of "pressure vessels that move".

RE: Rail Car Pressure Ratings & Tanker Truck Pressure Ratings
Amerian Assoc of Railroads writes rules for rail car tankers, ASME does not.
Over the road tankers that carry hazardous materials and have MAWP's in excess of 35 psi are supposed to be U Stamped. ASME in conjunction with US DOT has developed Section XII for transport tanks. It is based on DOT regulations, VIII-1,with some VIII-2 thrown in. US DOT has not accepted this book section yet. Maybe tthis year.
