VIII-1 pressure vessel windows.

VIII-1 pressure vessel windows.

VIII-1 pressure vessel windows.

(OP)

From my understanding, for a VIII-1 vessel, since there are no code rules on sight glasses or windows, the calculations for these components are not required in the MDR - ASME looks at these components as "proprietary". The designer only need define a boundary between the code-designed vessel and the "proprietary device".

Am I way off base here?

Thanks.

RE: VIII-1 pressure vessel windows.

Interp VIII-1-83-256 (Vol 15 page 144) addresses nonmetallic view ports and sends the reader to U-1(e)(1)(d).  Currently, it seems as though U-1(e)(1)(4) would apply as well. This defines the scope break at the first sealing surface for the proprietary fitting. If the view port is bolted to a B16.5 flange then that's easy. On the other hand, if the view port is provided as an obround device with part of it welded to the vessel to provide the sealing surface for the clear material then the part which is welded to the vessel is in the scope of the code; the components beyond the gasket are not.
