indentation: the indenter goes into the sample
indentation: the indenter goes into the sample
(OP)
I have this problem in an indentation simulation. The top layer of elements (sample being indented) which are in contact with the indenter got squeezed to be very thin. Then at some level the top edge of the element will go even lower than the bottom edge. The indenter is still in contact with the top edge of the the element so now the indenter is inside the material, which becomes a problem.
I am not sure whether I explained it clearly or not. Anyone can help here? I am really appreciated.

RE: indentation: the indenter goes into the sample
Due to the extreme distortion of the elements under the indenter, you have to use a highly refined mesh in this area. Also in Abaqus/Standard, the more refined mesh should be used as the slave surface. Another option is to consider the use of remeshing.
