Need help with finding tubing/pipe ASME approved...

Need help with finding tubing/pipe ASME approved...

(OP)
I post a thread many years ago when quoting a project (see thread794-108981: Help - Need to find a pipe supplier!).  Now this customer has come back and the same issue still applies.  I am trying to fabricate a flange ring/shell section 8.25" id x 9.25" od x 4.00" tall.  My questions/options are as follows:

1. Anyone know of a source that would supply ASME code acceptable Tubing/Pipe manufactured to 8.250" id x 9.250" od?

2. Can anyone provide a vendor source who could roll SA516GR70 .500" thk. plate to a 8.250 ID?

3.  Can anyone suggest a machine to purchsae and could roll this thick of material?

We are located in the Indianapolis area for reference.  Thank you to everyone in advance for all suggestions and comments.

Regards,

BTJ

if it were me...

i would cut a donut out of a piece of 4" thick sa-516-70 plate.

if you need it machined....cut it bigger

do you need a source for this little plate?

you will be hard pressed to find a roll to roll it

you could press break it...but would be hard to close up

do you need a bunch of them

you could water jet cut them instead oxy/fuel

I have attached the detail drawing of Flange Ring/Shell section we are trying to fabricate.  It is mating up to a piece of 8.625 od x .188 wall SA 53 Gr B pipe.  The quantities we are looking to quote 10, 15, 20 piece releases.  I have been contemplating to contact a pipe mill to have 20' length's produced and what the minimum order quantity would be.

btjvesseleng, any way you can weld a thin plate ring to a neck made from a short piece of your pipe, machine the ring for your O-ring groove, prepare the weld bevel, and join to the main cylinder? Execuse the crude sketch.

Another question that was raised was the possibility of recertifing the A513 Type 5 DOM, Welded (Tubing) to SA53 Gr B, ERW (Pipe, Welded)?  I do not have ASME Section II materials books to reference the differences in the chemistry or mechanical properties.  Can anyone look these up and see if it is possible?

Thanks,

Why not just have the pieces machined out of heavy wall tubing?

RE: Need help with finding tubing/pipe ASME approved...

I guess, they think, that since drawing says 9.25  its got to start 9.625

beats  me

i would not event think about getting special tubing made.

money grows on trees don'cha'no

RE: Need help with finding tubing/pipe ASME approved...

There is kind of an issue here with approved materials, if working to some code. You may not be able to rely on what the suppliers think you could use.

I don't know exactly how materials get approved for ASME Code use, but my guess is it is not cheap or fast.

Stonecold, I will tell you why I didn't use heavy wall "tubing"...

"Tubing" comes in at 8.250 id and 9.250 od (no ID or OD machining required saving $$$ cause money doesn't grow on tree's where I come from!!).

I have a pipe chart and to use heavy wall "Pipe"... 9" (9.625 od) x .500" wall does not get me to the ID of 8.250 either.

The reason I can not change the design is that this is an existing product line for my customer.  Replacement parts lists do not alow for change of the O-ring size and the machined cover plate.

I have recertified materials in the past to UG-10 and this is one instance where I was hoping I could do it again.

Thanks for all the reply's so far.

Have you looked at rolled rings?
People like McInnes make rings in your specified size and materials. I definately would get an RFQ off.

i think you are better w/ seamleess ring to spec.
