Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

(OP)
We're talking with an American engineering firm about some structural design work. They need the 'basic wind speed' - fastest 3 sec gust in past 50 years to calculate the wind load. I can't seem to find this data on the internet anywhere. Where should I be looking ? Wind Atlas ?

Incidentally a also need to find the snow load data for the sites. Again, nothing on the internet. Should I call local building authorities ?

RE: Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

For Ontario Canada I would check the Canadian Building Code.  I believe they have those Chinhook winds there, so there's probably some sort of special methodology to determine the wind load.

RE: Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

The National Building Code of Canada and the Ontario Building Code have design loads and velocities.  Designs loadings and application are stipulated in the respective codes.

I'll see if I can dig up my OBC for climatic info.  I can eMail you a copy of the NBC climatic info or post it to the site.

RE: Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

Ontario Building Code / National Building code of Canada provides wind and snow load for particular city in Ontario. Provide me with city name and I will provide you with answer. There are some more catches in it as I did a design for something right at Onatrio/ New York state border. I will pass that on to you also.

The locations are Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and Beachburg, Ontario, Canada.

Thanks so much.

RE: Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

Call the local code enforcement agency (Building Dept or Public Works) -- they will have the best data and what you must use for design....

RE: Looking for Basic wind speed data for Ontario

So dik has provided you with loads. Use Canadian formula completely to arrive at design loads.
Do not use ASCE patch up some where. I tried to do it before and is not a good idea to me.
