Generator Saturated impedances

Generator Saturated impedances

Generator Saturated impedances

(OP)
Hi

Could someone please explain to me what is meant by the term "saturated" when it comes to generator impedances? For example if given the direct axis subtransient, transient and synchronous reactance of a generator is it saturated or unsaturated and why?

Thanks in advance

Veritas

RE: Generator Saturated impedances

Saturated values are normally what is specified and can be assumed unless stated otherwise. That means the values are based on the iron in the magnetic circuits being saturated.

Hi alehman

Which magnetic circuit - stator, rotor or both? And what cuases them to saturate? Is it that under fault conditions the magnetising current is very large? If so why?

Thanks.

RE: Generator Saturated impedances

To save iron, the machine is designed to run slightly above the knee point of the saturation curve.  Not saturated enough to cause problems during normal operation, but not with any more iron than necessary.  Any fault current would then push the stator into saturation.  Other than rotor resistance, pretty much all of the parameters are for the stator.

RE: Generator Saturated impedances

Saturated means the impedance is measured at maximum (rated no-load) voltage. For fault calculations, the implicit assumption is that at the moment of the fault the machine will be at rated voltage. Saturated impedance will give the highest fault value.

Thanks all, I have a better idea now what its all about.
