Gasket issues

(OP)
Hi All,
In working my way thru Appendix 2 I dont quite see any guidelines for restricting the hiegth of a gasket nubbet on something like a 1(c) type gasket arrangement. Is this not of concern to ASME? I would think they would worry about shearing of the little protrusion due to the internal pressure. Or maybe the gasket would blow away before this would happen!
Please advise. Thanks.

RE: Gasket issues

sp231, all the nubbins I have ever seen are the 1/64 in. high per Figs 2 & 3, for 1/8" thk gaskets. I personally consider the use of them a poor practice, except for a solid metal gasket. I usually design as if the nubbin were not there, even if furnished.

As to your question, I suppose if very tall you could check the cross section for shear due to pressure. I would think it would most likely exceed that of the gasket.

Regards,

Mike
