Welder qualification with no P number??

Welder qualification with no P number??

Welder qualification with no P number??

(OP)
I would like to certify my welders with pipe that I already have in the shop.  It has no P no. It does have an S no. though.  Does it matter for welder quals?  My rookie understanding is a p no. will cover an s no. but not the reverse. We are just getting our feet wet with ASME work and want the t's crossed and i's dotted. Any help is appreciated.

This post for Sec IV. if it helps.

RE: Welder qualification with no P number??

Your understanding is correct reagrding S-No and P-No for ASME Section IX procedure and welder qualification. Use the pipe in the shop for welding practice but purchase pipe with the necessary documentation for procedure and welder certification.

RE: Welder qualification with no P number??

You should be able to use S number materials for welder qualifications per QW-423.1.

I already have PQR's and am only trying to certify the welders.  For our paperwork I need to reference the PQR in the welder qualification documentation. I guess the main problem is that I dont have a PQR with an S no. base metal.

Is this my problem then??

I dont have my book with me to check QW-423.1 but will check as soon as I do.

Thanks for input.

RE: Welder qualification with no P number??

You do not need to reference the PQR in the welder's performance qualification form.  The WPS is usually recorded on the form, but is not required.  The required information is values for each essential variable, type of tests and results, and ranges qualified (see QW-301.4).

A WPS qualified for P-Number base metal is also qualified for the corresponding S-Number base metals, but not vice versa (see QW-420.2 third paragraph).  And, if the base metal used for welder qualification conforms to a national or international specification or standard, and it conforms to the mechanical properties and chemical composition of a material that has a P- or S-Number, it may be considered as having the same P- or S-Number (see QW-423.2).  That means you can use it and you don't have to revise the WPS to use it.  So, you can use S-Number for welder qualification, or even an unlisted base metal if it meets those requirements.

Thank you for the response.  I will use it for the tests.  The nice thing about it is the 5/8 wall and 6 3/4 od. Its about perfect for the welder tests.

RE: Welder qualification with no P number??

I should have also mentioned that for performance qualification, QW-423.1 provides a table that shows the P- or S-Number used in the test in the left column vs. the P- or S-Numbers that may be welded in the right column.  It also shows that (for performance qualification) a test using an S-Number qualifies for P- or S-Number materials.
