Shear calculation

Shear calculation

Shear calculation

(OP)
I am trying to do a design for a HSS 6x6x0.25" (structural tubing)that will be located between 2 storefront (10'x10' each) and attached to a 12"x17" concrete column but unfortanely I don't have still the steel manual. Can anyone please tell me the shear factor or the allowable shear for it. Thank you in advance.

RE: Shear calculation

72.5k - factored
48.3k - service

StructuralEIT, my beam has a Fy= 36000 ksi, and is an ASTM A36 steel, beleive that I should consider my allowable shear stress like 040 Fy. What do you seen? The values that you gave me look like a little high, no offense.

RE: Shear calculation

Well, you said HSS, HSS (rectangular) is typically only available with 46ksi yield (A500 Gr. B) - I believe there would be a significant up-charge to get A36 HSS.  Additionally, per the shear provisions in AISC, you use 0.6Fy.  Using Fy=36ksi, the values drop to :
56.7k - factored
37.8k - service

StructuralEIT, thank you for you rteply.

RE: Shear calculation

Mayito, 0.6Fy is the nominal shear stress.  For ASD, this becomes 0.6Fy/1.67 = 0.359Fy for HSS members.

It is 0.4Fy for webs of rolled I-shapes, where omega is 1.5.
