Reduced section for bolting through compression flange?
Reduced section for bolting through compression flange?
(OP)
I know this is probably a silly question. How do you typically handle bolting through the compression flange of a W section. I see lots of info on effective net section for tension members in the AISC but no talk about compression side of beams. I could find the reduced Ix easily enough but would a hole in only 1 side of the flange affect buckling state? I am an EIT and havent done alot of steel design. Thanks.

You do need to make sure that the bolts are working by checking for shear, bearing, etc., also the connecting elements like the gussets or angles you are using to connect the members together. Check part 9 of the AISC Manual.
