Does anyone know of a formal definition for "shear thickness".  For instance, in the Nastran QRG, for shell elements you can define a transverse shear thickness ratio (ts/t) - for which the default is 0.8333.  Where does 0.8333 come from?  Anyone know?  Is 0.8333 taken to be thickness that, when uniformly sheared, will yield an equivalent max shear stress?

0.8333 = 5/6 which is 1/F where F is the transverse shear stress shape factor for a homogeneous rectangular section.  See Roark, section 7.10 (5th Ed) Beams of Relatively Great Depth
