I Wanna Borrow Generic Piston Engine Parts for Catia Please!

(OP)
Hello ladies and gents,

Apologies but I am on the scrounge big time for some Catia (or maybe solidworks) generic engine parts! Now unemployed in a melting car industry, would like take some of my mad inventions lurking on the backburner for about 10 years, forwards!
I reckon I can get a headstart on one of the engine projects if I can borrow someones existing piston engine models, ideally i3, though v6, i4 or even single cylinder would also be pretty handy! No point in duplicating existing work.

Be nice to turn daydreams into something tangible! There could be a few pennies your way for the right models. =clown ben
Ps i love these videos on you tube and wanna make something similar so gotta start somewhere!

Thank you for reading this even if you cant help, and good luck with your own stuff, be creative kids!

If you have experience on CATIA 5 or 4 it is about 45 min to create a solid. I doubt very serious if there is a standard piston that would work with your new idea.
Try downloading a piston build sheet that has the piston pictured and specs that you fill in.IE bore dia, comp ht, ring sp, etc. similar to this one from J&E http://www.jepistons.com/pdf/custompistons-orderform.pdf
Also if you are working with CATIA 5 make sure you set your part up using para metrics. That way you can change it later with no problems...
If not try this one..
I tried to get a patent for it but Nissan beat me by a year. They probably saved me a lot of money on something else that doesn't work.

Cheers

I don't know anything but the people that do.

Hi Thundair!

Thanks for your quick reply and links, much appreciated.
yeah the patent thing accelerates in time and cost quite quickly, you need everything ready to rock, the 12 months cover doesnt last long ...........just 12 months! =clown

Yep im semi expert on V5 now, but as you said parametrics is the key, i.e. if someone already has parametric models properly built, then I would be able to stretch and play with them without doing the initial donkey work. There´s also the practical stuff like bearing shells and oil runs etc. Then assembly trees etc etc. I reckon there could be a lot of time saved which could make a big difference to the end result. I.e making lovely rendered videos or bit half-arsed bogged down modelling. To be perfectly honest i have a problem finishing projects generally!! this one will be different...........maybe.

Its easier to start at Himalayan base camp than Katmandu airport! FYI Im adapting a 3B20 engine to build one of the concepts.

To follow your analogy
While it may be easier to start at base camp, you may find that the trek from the airport prepares you for base camp and beyond.  The air is already thin at base camp and jumping in before you are prepared is a sure way to failure or extensive delay.

You have targeted a mountian higher than Everest, be just as prepared.

Back to the real world, build your model from the ground, that way you know how it was built.  When you know how it was built, you can adjust it to suit your needs as demands change, (and they will).

From my perspective (20 years CAD, 10 years parametrically), inheriting some generous souls parametric solid models of engine bits and bobs that I can cherry pick from will be easier than starting from scratch.

This opinion is not aligned though with messrs hydrae & thundair! whose comments are nevertheless acknowledged and appreciated! =clown

Let me know folks if you have anything to dump on my skydrive to get the project started. I certainly dont want to be modelling turbo assembly etc if someone has already done it as a training exercise for example.

Cheerio and have a nice weekend in cyberville. Ben

Cheers Sir Limey!

That looks just the ticket.
Ive saved a bunch of links to investigate this stuff in a few weeks once some other rubbish is out of the way. Im told Solidworks to Catia V6 conversion is easy enough - we will see!
I propose to grab as many models as possible, then cherry pick / discard, to create an engine parts smorgasbord.
In reverse of the original post, if anybody wants these parts get in touch and we can sky drive share.

Ben

PS Still on the look out for parts if you have any, now Ive got some of my "own" we can play swapsies.
