Copy w/mates to different assembly?

Copy w/mates to different assembly?

Copy w/mates to different assembly?

(OP)
I have two similar assemblies.  One is missing some parts.
I can drag the missing part from its line in the deluxe assembly's feature tree to the top of the spartan assembly's feature tree, and the part ends up in the right place in the model, but with no mates.

Is there a way to also drag the mates from one assembly to another?

RE: Copy w/mates to different assembly?

I don't think so. I think the mates are specific to the assembly they are created.

Drat.

But, thanks for responding.

How similar are the assemblies? Could you use Pack and Go tp create a new assy, and then suppress or delete the unwanted parts? All mates would then be maintained.

Or you could add Mate References to the part before inserting into the new assy.

RE: Copy w/mates to different assembly?

I was thinking the same as CBL. Or just do a "Save as" to new assy and replace/add missing parts.

RE: Copy w/mates to different assembly?

You might also be able to create different configurations of the assembly, depending on what the differences are.  If you're just removing parts to create the spartan version, this is easy - simply suppress the parts that are not needed.

It all depends on where you are in development and what your filing convention requires.

They're variations on the same root.

They diverged mostly because two different people are working on them, and we're inexpert in different ways.

Then all you need do is add a Lock mate to an adjacent part, or maybe even just Fix the part.

On closer inspection, the part was in _almost_ the right place, so I had to add the mates.

Thanks.

I have not made much use of "mate reference", but it is something to think about.  It would probably be a lot of up front leg work, but might make sense for your application.  Do a SolidWorks help search for smartmates or mate reference.

Thanks, Shaggy.

If the parts are mated to one another, you can combine them into subs in the first assembly then drag the sub to the second aseembly.  Don't forget to NOT save the first assembly.
