File Management

File Management

File Management

(OP)
This has been explained to me in the past, but details are fuzzy. Could someone give me a quick rundown on 'send to'a directory vs. 'save management/save as' to a separate folder location? UUID's and links are my primary concerns...

Thanks in advance.

RE: File Management

New = New UUID
New From = New UUID
Save As (New option checked) = New UUID
Save As = Same UUID
Save Management = Same UUID
Send To  = Same UUID

Save As with documents linking to the document in question in session will result in relinking of the documment to the new copy.

Also be aware of Tool-->Options-->General-->Document tab-->Linked document localisation
it defines where CATIA will search for linked documents and can result in you opening a different copy of a document than you intended.

That definitely helps, Thank You PeterGuy.
I am still fuzzy on something, some guys swear by the send to operation, saying it is the only way to get a copy of a model that will not link, or ghost back to the model being copied. Personally, I have had good luck using the save mgmt./save as to get a working copy and have yet to link back to anything. Also save mgmt./save as seems to drop the unnecessary files from the old when transferring to the new.
   What do you guys think?
Thanks,   -Random

Also be aware of Tool-->Options-->General-->Document tab-->Linked document localization

If you move Relative folder to the top of the list, Catia will open from the current directory -->
Then it will look to the Folder of the Pointed document
Next - Folder of the Link.

This will allow you to move an entire job off a server to another spot and work on it. Disclaimer time: provided all your files are under the parent directory that you moved to the alternate location.

Regards,
Derek

My tools>options... settings are locked (customer default) in this manner.
Document location         Active
___________________________________
Folder of the link          Yes
Folder of the pointing doc  Yes
Relative folder             Yes
Other folders               Yes
...etc........              Yes

I appreciate you guys sharing this info. with me, unfortunately, I feel there are still holes in my understanding of this topic. Can you break it down more?
 Sorry, Thanks....-Random

RE: File Management

folder of the link -> look for the linked document in the absolute path it was last seen in

Folder of the pointing document -> look in the same location as the document you have opened containing the link

Relative folder -> look for the linked document in a folder having the same relative position to the folder containg the document you have opened

Other folder -> look where I tell you

catalogs & startup -> look in the locations defined by the CATIA environment (bacically in the install directory)

CATIA will search for the linked document in the list order if it reaches the bottom and has not found it you will get the I cannot find it error message.
