determining apparent stress

determining apparent stress

determining apparent stress

(OP)
Hi all,
I have a structure, which is highly porous. I've attached an image to try to show the structure and mesh. I'm applying uniaxial compression by load displacement to only the top nodes (the bottom nodes are fully constrained).
We want to look at localised stresses/strains with respect to apparent stress/strain.
I'm not sure how I determine the apparent or macro-level stress of the structure.
I've currently been selecting the top level nodes (which the displacement load is applied to) and calculate the sum of nodal forces in the z direction (fsum and then select fz).
I then divide this by the surface area on the top face.
If this is correct or incorrect and i need to calculate a different way could anyone let me know.
If this doesn't make sense please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mel
