Reciprocating Compressor VFD

Reciprocating Compressor VFD

Reciprocating Compressor VFD

(OP)
Hi Guys,
I am here in Korea with a high pressure diaphragm pump (1,500 psi) driven from an ABB ACS510/550. The problem is it won't pull away under load (800 psi is no problem). We had the ABB rep in to solve a low speed excessive curent problem, I'm told he changed the V/F curve to linear but I suspect we need something more. The manual and display are in Korean and I don't seem able to download an English version.
If someone could suggest a fix and perhaps an English parameter listing that would be a great help.
Thanks in advance
Roy

RE: Reciprocating Compressor VFD

Often the problem is the unloader.  Also if you try to start too slowly the unloader may "load" before the motor is at full speed.

Does it have an unloader?

RE: Reciprocating Compressor VFD

roydm, I am quite familiar with the ABB ACS550 and will try to help.  A couple of questions first:

1.  Are you running the drive in sensorless vector or scalar mode?

2.  Is there any gearing or belt/pulleys between the motor and the compressor?

3.  You can certainly download an Instruction Manual in English from the ABB website.

Let me know on the above

Itsmoked,
No it doesn't have an unloader just a gearbox with a crank and 3 recipricating diaphragms Lewa is the brand, new installation. We have e-mailed Lewa but no response yet

Thanks for the response
Roy

RE: Reciprocating Compressor VFD

Sounds to me like you should contact ABB Technical Support in your area.  It's going to be rather difficult to do a complete setup any other way.

If you cannot find a local contact, call 800.752.0696 option 1, then option 1, and ask for contact information in your area.

Thanks for the help guys, I told the client to get ABB back. I don't expect to hear the solution as I will return to Canada before it's resolved.
Does the cable length 50 meters and lack of Line/Load reactors have any effect on starting torque?

RE: Reciprocating Compressor VFD

I would not expect cable length to affect starting torque in any way.
