Hello,

I have a unique case where a bolt is going to see bending stress.  Two "brackets" are being bolted together around double angels.  One bracket will be connected to the double angle.  The other bracket will be bolted to the first one.  The problem is that the bolt will have at least 3" of length that is possible to bend (7" if no spacer is welded to the first bracket.

I cannot put any sort of spacer or washer element in those 3" as the bolt will be passing through a non-structural element.  

I have attached a crude drawing of what I am talking about.
The bottom channel shape is the first bracket that will be connected to the double angles.  The double angles have a 2" separation.  The top channel is the second bracket.  The orange is the bolt in question.  The red is the area where we cannot attach anything.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to account for the bending that the bolt will see due to the un-restrained length of bolt?  Any help is appreciated!

Sorry, the second bracket will be seeing  a downward force (into the drawing) and a tensile force (up on the drawing).  The shear is approximately 40 kips, and the tension is around 20 kips.

The RCSC specification does provide some guidance for reducing a bolt's shear capacity when a loose filler plate is used.  My understanding is that this a way to account for the bending loads on the bolt. I think this is somewhat analogous to your situation.

Thank you for the link and information.  Unfortunately the equation regarding fillers seems to only be acceptable up to a 3/4" application where mine will be at least 3".
