Hardener for Cold Mounting

Hardener for Cold Mounting

Hardener for Cold Mounting

(OP)
During Cold Mounting of some metallurgical samples (cast iron) , i accidently spilled HARDENER in the lab today. I am using Technovit 4004 (hardener and resin ). I have ordered new one and delivery time is after one and half week.

Can anybody tell me the recipe of HARDENER (proportions of methyl, ethyl alcohol, acrylic etc)?? I have these in my lab. Can i do it ??? It will be good to finish the REPORT on time ,Otherwise i m going to have to wait for sometime and that is annoying.
thank for help in advance

RE: Hardener for Cold Mounting

If you are in a hurry just use 5 minute epoxy from the hardware store to mount your specimen. Post curing in an oven will get the epoxy harder and easier to polish.

RE: Hardener for Cold Mounting

On a small plate of aluminium or glass, place a blob of epoxy putty or clay mterial(used by children. Place your sample on this and using a small hand press mount the sample. This gets embedded in the putty/clay and you are ready to move forward with your metallography examination.

RE: Hardener for Cold Mounting

If you go the 5 minute epoxy route, it will be beneficial to chill it while it is setting. Otherwise, due to the thickness of the mount and heat build up, it may develop bubbles, cracks and fissures.
