Hi guys,

I have this situation where I have a bored pile socketed into rock at a depth of 3m. The pile itself must resist a shear force and overturning moment. From my analysis, I require the soil (organic clay) to develop a passive resistance of 100kPa (15psi). How can I quantify that this passive resistance can be achieved at such a shallow depth. I always thought that passive resistance follows Earth Pressure theory.

Passive Pressure = Kp*Soil Density*Soil Depth

For piles the passive resistance also includes the term "Cp", which is a value that takes into account the arching affect (i.e., a pile is not loading in the plane strain condition). Typically (rule of thumb), Cp is taken as phi/10.
