Machinability Index
Machinability Index
(OP)
I am looking for a machinability index for various metals. I would prefer a downloadable index, but if someone knows of any good books to reference it would be helpful.
Thanks

RE: Machinability Index
1. Machinery's Handbook, published by Industrial Press. This is an excellent source of data on machinability, feeds and speeds, etc. for various materials. You can purchase this reference from many places (do a google search).
2. ASM HANDBOOK Volume 16 Machining. This is an authoritative reference, covering every type of material, machining operation, etc. Some of the information is also available in METALS HANDBOOK, Desk Edition. You can obtain these books from ASM at http://www.asminternational.org.
3. Steel suppliers like Ispat Inland, Macsteel, and Timken all produce pocket references that contain steel machinability data, and make them available for free to users. Most of the data comes from the industry standard SAE J1397, Estimated Mecahnical Properties and Machinability of Steel Bars. You can obtain J1397 at http://www.sae.org.
