Bolts Strength (regular A325 bolts vs. stainless steel bolts)

Bolts Strength (regular A325 bolts vs. stainless steel bolts)

Is there any difference in bolts strength for regular A307 or A325 bolts vs stainless steel bolts? Does AISC talk about this?

RE: Bolts Strength (regular A325 bolts vs. stainless steel bolts)

Yes.  No.

IFRs, how much bolt strength (shear and tensile) do you consider in design for stainless steel bolts? What is tensile and shear strengths of A304 stainless steel bolts?

RE: Bolts Strength (regular A325 bolts vs. stainless steel bolts)

I use 50ksi yield and 90ksi tensile and 20% elongation, allowable shear of 10.5ksi (threads in shear plane) and 15ksi (threads excluded).  Check http://www.ssina.com/view_a_file/fasteners.pdf for more info.

RE: Bolts Strength (regular A325 bolts vs. stainless steel bolts)

It depends on which grade of stainless steel, whether it is cold worked or not, and the diameter of the bolt.  Check ASCE 8-02 for guidance.

As for your A304 bolts, for hot finished bolts, the nominal tensile is 56ksi, shear 33.7ksi (threads in shear plane) or 45ksi (threads not in shear plane)...ref. Table 6, ASCE 8-02.

If cold worked, the nominal stress goes up slightly, but depends on the diameter of the bolt.

RE: Bolts Strength (regular A325 bolts vs. stainless steel bolts)

Depends on the bolt property class. e.g. Ax-50 has fu=500MPa while Ax-70 has fu=700MPa.
You should be able to get data from a bolt supplier.
