I have currently produced some sheetmetal prints for a customer and now he has asked me to produce the wiring harness.  I do have this option.  Can anyone tell me about a good book to get started with.  Once I get started, I will not have any troubles.  Please advise.

RE: Pro Cabling/Harness

Metaltech,

See my answer at the  "Technique to create 34 Way Ribbon Cables using Pro/ Cabling module" post (several pages back from here).

I explained there the basic procedure to create a cable.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.  I figured out how to make the cable.  I drew them in with free ends.  When it comes to drawing the cables with say spade connectors, do you pull in and place the connectors and then attach the wires?  Or, do you need to just have them in the BOM and not on the wires.  I am using 2000i.  Would you have a sample harness that I could look at?  I don't mean to bother you, but you are the only one I have talked to that seems to know about cabling.  I can see the benefit of using this within the assembly, and would like to learn it.  I have several other assemblies to work on for my customer, so I would like to do them myself and thus "keep the money" for myself.  Let me know what you think.

thanks

RE: Pro Cabling/Harness

Hello Derick,

Few words about connectors... You must add a coordinate system in your connector at the point where you want to attach the cable. Attention at Z axis!

The cable assembly. Let's assume you want to create a cable with 2 connctors at the ends (something like a printer cable). Your cable will be an assembly (2 connectors and 1 cable between them). Let's assume you want to see this assembly number in your BOM. In this case, you must create an assembly, let's say MyCable.

STEP 1
In MyCable, assemble the first connector, Connector_1.

STEP 2
Open your main assembly and install MyCable (i.e. plug the Connector_1 in a socket). Then, you must add the second connector, Connector_2 to your cable. See next STEP.

STEP 3
You are in Main Assembly!. Chosse MODIFY->MOD SUBASM->pick MyCable assembly ->COMPONENT->ASSEMBLE->choose your second connector (Connector_2) and place it at your desired location. NOTE: You will have a link now between the MyCable assembly and MainAssembly.

STEP 4
Open MyCable assembly in a window. Do not erase Main Assembly from memory! Create your Harness H1, the spool C1 (cable), modify thickness value if you want. Then create the cable (Cable_1).
Then COMPONENTS -> DESIGNATE and designate the entry ports of the connectors.
Do not route the cable! Save the assembly.

STEP 5
Close MyCable window. Open Main Assembly and choose Cabling fron the application menu. Click on HARNESS and choose your H1 harness.
Noe choose ROUTE-> seclect your Cable from menu -> DONE until you have the routing options, choose ENTRY PORT-> pick on your coord sys of the Connector_1. Route your cable up to your second connector.

Save the assembly.

In that way, in your drawing BOM table, you will see the MyCable name assembly. (like any other assembly or part).

If you want to list all components of the cable (like no of wires, length, connectors, from location, to location, etc etc) in a BOM table, let me know, I will try to help you.

Usualy, I use this method.

You can create the harness and spool in your MainAssembly instead of MyCable, but I prefer to do like that.

I hope I answered at your question.

-Hora.

Thanks again for the assistance.  I am starting to get the hang of it.  Still having some troubles with the coordinate system.  Picked the entry ports as you said in the sub assembly, but could not see them in the main assembly.  Did get them to route from a point though.  How do I get it to jump over the parts of the main assembly? My main assemblies are already build with transformers, parts, etc, So I would like to start with this.  Plus, to answer your question as to whether I would need assistance on length, to and from locations, etc.  Yes, I am going to need this to be able to give the prints to a manufacturer for production.  Also,  is there a good spot for downloading connectors like spade or ring connectors?  Again, thanks for letting me bother you.

Derick

RE: Pro Cabling/Harness

Hi again,

I have no idea from where you can download the connectors you need. Try www.proecentral.com

If you cannot see the coordinate systems in your main assembly: Check the layers status!
