ASME 9-Writing 1 WPS out of 2 supporting PQRs

ASME 9-Writing 1 WPS out of 2 supporting PQRs

ASME 9-Writing 1 WPS out of 2 supporting PQRs

(OP)
Could anybody Please provide an answer..

Is it possible to write a WPS out of 2 supporting PQRs of different Processes(Gtaw and Smaw-both are of 8mm test coupons),provided all other essential variable are within limit.
It seems ASME Section 9, QW 200.4(a) and(b) confusing for me.Could anybody clarify it in simple words.

Yes it is allowed to write a single WPS with multiple PQRs, but you're looking in the wrong section.  Review QW-200.2 in its entirety, specifically QW-200.2(f).

QW-200.4(a) is in reference to production welding, it is simply stating that you may use multiple WPSs on a single production joint.

(b) gives guidelines of how to qualify a root layer only procedure, used in conjuction with other PQRs.

Thanks for prompt reply DVWE,

I understood from your reply like this :

1)For supporting PQRs of smaller thickness(test coupons of PQRs less than 13mm)also, a single WPS can be produced, provided all other parameters are conforming.

I was under a wrong impression as you mentioned, that for  a minimum 13mm thickness required for supporting PQR

2)If my PQRs,one GTAW and other one SMAW both on 8mm thickness each, its possible me to club supporting PQRs(GTAW+SMAW) and write a new WPS for 8mm thick---Am I Right?

Thanks again DVWE..

RE: ASME 9-Writing 1 WPS out of 2 supporting PQRs

Based on your information, I'm going to make some assumptions.
1. You have a weld joint in production which is 8mm thick.
2. You have a GTAW WPS/PQR which was qualified on 8mm thick plate.
3. You have a SMAW WPS/PQR which was also qualified on 8mm thick plate.
4. You want to create a new WPS which uses a GTAW root pass, and SMAW fill with the existing PQRs that you have.

Are all these correct?

DVWE,

Assumptions are Exactly Correct..GTAW-Root and SMAW-Other passes

Hope a reply from your end, will be really helpful for me.
Tahnks

You can absolutely combine these PQRs to make your WPS.

RE: ASME 9-Writing 1 WPS out of 2 supporting PQRs

yes

Technically you can do it, but what about the Code,
seems to me that combination welding is not aloowed.
your option is a combination PQR with all the parameters
then you can have several WPS's which is different.
