what software would you recommend for designing precast walls, insulated composite and also just plain walls?
Thanks

RE: Precast walls

The thought of using any kind of software to design a wall, precast or otherwise has never occurred to me.  Sorry, I have no recommendation to make.  But I am curious as to why you believe you need this.

Best regards,

BA

RE: Precast walls

Generally, the wall supplier will provide tables for the design of precast concrete walls.

I guess I am looking to streamline operations. With different size walls, loads, etc, it has to be easier to do with a program than by hand. P-delta effects, pre-stressing, etc all seem to be tedious, and need to be efficient. Even when I was designing tilt-up, we used software to be efficient. Computers are a tool, so I need to take advantage.

DaveAtkins - I am the engineer for the precaster, just that they are becoming more sophisticated and not just doing cladding and stairs anymore. For load bearing panels, there cannot be tables due to loads, etc.

Thanks both for your input, but I am just wanting to see what programs people use.

RE: Precast walls

Any commercially available program (STAADPRO, RISA3D, name 2 her) would fit your needs. Or you may want to write your own programs to incorporate special considerations and/or parameters atypical to general practice. For such case, you can look into spreadsheet (Excel), MathCad, TEDD...

RE: Precast walls

PCA walls could be one of your choices.  have used it on a precast wall job.  very useful.

RE: Precast walls

We used tables for loadbearing precast in australia, similar to column charts.

Any way, I am all for computers for iterative work but if you are doing a lot of this I would expect that it would be much quicker to do by hand once you get used to it.

Calculate moment and axial capacities for typical ranges of panel thicknesses and reinforcement.

RE: Precast walls

csd - who publishes the tables? I have always had to design by hand/spreadsheet.

Thanks.
