how can I find out who if anyone owns the rights to the names/symbols of defunct auto companies, Hudson, Nash, Kaiser, etc.

start selling under the name and wait to see if you get sued?

you could also try the US Patent and Trademark Office to see who has the names registered.

Perform keyword searches for those items to see if they are available.
