Should we go to 2009?

Should we go to 2009?

Should we go to 2009?

(OP)
I'm new to this forum, so hello everyone.
I would like to get some feelings about 2009sp2.0
How many people out there are using it and is anyone having problems with it?
We are currently using 2008sp5.0 here, but we have the opportunity to go to 2009sp2.0, but due to no backwards compatibility, we would not be able to go back. We also will not be able to get any more service packs newer than 2.0. should we go to 2009 or not?
Thanks everyone.

RE: Should we go to 2009?

Some love it, some hate it. The only real way to find out is to perform extensive testing with your product, procedures, hardware, network and associated software. This should be done with every upgrade.

If full backups of your files are made and used for the testing, you will be able to go back.

cheers

Thanks guys, it seems i'm not alone. is anyone out there experiencing any difficulties at all with 2009sp2.0? it seems any major 2009 issues may have been resolved, but i bet they'll still get to sp5.0 eventually

RE: Should we go to 2009?

I've been doing standalone testing and it seems better than SW2008 SP4.0. The only thing I haven't done was test it with Workgroup PDM. I have heard there's some problems with PDM and SW2009 because of no enhancements to Workgroup. SW is concentrating on Enterprise PDM and kicked Workgroup to the wayside. In fact, I heard of bugs in Workgroup & SW2009, but might have been fix in SP2.0?

We're still planning on making the move in the next couple of weeks to SW2009 SP2.0 because we're having major crashes in SW2008 SP4.0.

That's it for now, welcome to the forum, and good luck.

Best,

RE: Should we go to 2009?

If you're already using the not-entirely-stable v2008, moving to v2009 is probably a safe move.  I'm using it on a mostly prismatic-shape project with lots of parts and so far, I like it better than v2008.  The interface gets in the way far less (and often really helps in terms of speed/convenience), so that's far better than some of the interface quirks I've seen in v2008.

From what I've seen with other people's experience, however, you'll want to make sure your hardware is able to cope with the requirements.  Have plenty of RAM, use the /3GB switch, and make sure your graphics card (and driver!) are up to the specs at the SW web site.

Great point about the hardware requirements Jeff.

I have a Dell PWS690 with an X5355 quad core @ 2.66GHz, 8GB of RAM running XP64 and an nVidia Quadro FX3500, but some people here are running much lower specs and 32bit. Does that 3GB switch really work?

RE: Should we go to 2009?

The /3GB switch should NOT be used with x64 systems. It will/could actually restrict the OS from using more than 3GB.

cheers

RE: Should we go to 2009?

Exactly.  The /3GB switch even worked in the days when 0.5GB of RAM was normal for a workstation.

Essentially, it changes the default memory allocation of Windows--altering the ratio between allocation to the operating system and allocation to the programs you want to run.  Since the default of Windows is to allocate half of all RAM to itself--and since Windows really doesn't need, say, 2GB of RAM (unless you're running Vista winky smile ) you can alter that ratio to 1GB RAM to Windows for 3GB RAM to the programs you wish to run.  From what I understand, you're altering the ratio of RAM, and not the literal amount of RAM, assuming the maximum amount of RAM that can be used by a 32-bit operating system is limited to 4GB.

RE: Should we go to 2009?

FYI 32bit Windows will not recognize 4GB of RAM it comes will only recognize 3GB.

RE: Should we go to 2009?

I must have changed thoughts in the middle of that last post.  That is what I get for starting and stopping and posting later.

It should have read:  Windows 32bit (XP atleast) will not recognize 4GB of RAM, even with the machine comes with 4GB installed it only recognizes 3GB.

RE: Should we go to 2009?

Yup, and please note this is total memory, not just the RAM in the memory slots.  It includes the graphics card memory too, so if one has 256MB on their card, that actually takes away from the 4GB limit.  Windows does recongize more, but it saves at least 1GB for itself if you use the /3GB switch.   If you don't, windows hogs up 2GB for itself.

RE: Should we go to 2009?

I am not sure it will recognize the 4gb.  I have a workstation with 4gb of RAM installed and a 512mb graphics card.  When I right click on "my computer" and select "properties" it only lists 3GB of RAM.  I have enabled the 3GB switch as well.

RE: Should we go to 2009?

Your statement that you will not be able to get service packs beyond 2.0 suggests that your service agreement is going to lapse.  If that is the case, and you decide not to move to 2009 at this time, it would be a good idea to download the latest service pack just before your agreement expires.  That way you would still have the option of moving to 2009 with that service pack if you decide to at a latter date.
