Potential move to Nuclear sector - question about NRC regulations

Potential move to Nuclear sector - question about NRC regulations

Potential move to Nuclear sector - question about NRC regulations

(OP)
I was let go by an EPC engineering company a few weeks ago.  I am an I&C Engineer with ~25 years experience in the chemical sector.  I've been very interested in a move to the nuclear market for some years and especially so now that I'm unemployed and nuclear work seems to be about the only active market.  All my career I have seen ads for nuclear engineering positions (all disciplines) that mention 'must be familiar with NRC regulations'.  I don't have access to any NRC documentation, so I'm very curious what it could be that is so different or stringent from 'special class' regulations we see in the NEC and NFPA codes.

Could someone give the cliff-notes version of NRC regulation requirements as it applies to instrumentation, control, or electrical disciplines?  Also if there are any good reads online regarding the subject, that'd be cool too.

Cheers

RE: Potential move to Nuclear sector - question about NRC regulations

Hi Newdryno,

You could try accessing the NRC website which publishes quite a bit on the CFR (Code Federal Regulations) and other documents. I found the attached in fairly short order

http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr0800/

which is the Standard Review Plan for the Review of Safety Analysis Reports for Nuclear Power Plants (NUREG-0800)and Chapter 7 looks at Instrumentation and Controls.

I believe that VPL (another Eng-tips poster) works for the NRC (or at least she used to) so if she doesn't notice this post you could repost in the "Nuclear Engineering Other Topics" forum which she has posted to in the past. Alternatively you could try contacting the NRC directly at

http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/contactus.html

Hope this helps, HM

Also looked under power reactors and found the following:

which has links for regulations and guidance and technical references.

RE: Potential move to Nuclear sector - question about NRC regulations

I recently made the move to nuclear from textiles.  I had no prior knowledge of NRC regulations and was not asked.  Anything you need to know at a nuclear site will be given to you through training and procedures.  Things are very tightly controlled.  If you want to get a background, look up info on 10CFR.  For me at least, the experience has been positive and I would recommend looking into it.
