Looking for Fastener Specification Cross Reference

Looking for Fastener Specification Cross Reference

(OP)
Looking for a Fastener specification cross-reference to base materials. Typically, one would go to a standard, i.e. ASTM and it provides a table of acceptable metal chemistry to produce in accordance with a fastener specification. Then you must consult with a metallurgist and a metals distributor to determine a range of suitable metals. I am looking for a manufacturers guide to refer to the most common metal grades suitable to a given fastener specification, so we can bypass the metallurgist. Any recommendations?

Reply to Shmulik:

This is what I want, but for metals. To be more specific, if I input ASTM A325 Type 1, I wish to see the following:

Most Common Possible Metals:
C1030-C1052

In a perfect world, I would also like to see this as well.

Specifications with similar materials, mechanical properties and design intent (ie externally threaded fasteners):

ASTM A449 Type 1
ASTM A354 Grade BC
SAE J429 Grade 5

You should try obtaining information on this subject from the Industrial Fasteners Institute.  Their website is http://www.industrial-fasteners.org/. ; Two books that they offer may be of use to you:

Fastener Standards, Seventh Edition - 2001 ($99.50 in US, $145 elsewhere)

Metric Fastener Standards, Third Edition - 1999 ($140 in US, $190 elsewhere).

I just found what you are looking for:

http://euler9.tripod.com/fasteners/

You want the Fastener Design Manual link.  Pages 37-88 of this manual have charts with consensus standard (e.g. ASTM) and chemical composition (e.g. AISI designation).
