Looking for tips and techniques for welding Carpenter 20 alloy.

If you can, consider using E320LR.  The LR (for Low Residuals) is intended to help prevent centerline cracking in the weld during solidification due to residual elements like Phos. and Sulfer, in the fully austenitic microstructure.  Also, contact Carpenter, or the manufacturer that you are buying the material from.  They usually have extensive literature available on welding the alloys they produce.
