Area of Refuge

Area of Refuge

Area of Refuge

(OP)
Reading NFPA 101 (2006) I find all requirements of an Area of Refuge but I cannot find any section that states when/where I need Area of Refuges.  Can anyone help me out?

RE: Area of Refuge

NOT an 101 person, but in some  of the occupancies it lloks like it says SHALL be permitted and one or two do require it.

Not sure what shall be permitted means, but also look at the sprinkler exception for area of refuge, maybe that is why it does not get specific.

Do you have a 101 handook??? may be a little more clear in it.

RE: Area of Refuge

Areas of Refuge are required for those portions of the building where the means of egress is required to be accessible.

Generally the design of areas of refuge and the egress system is prepared by the architect.

RE: Area of Refuge

Area of refuge requirement is in ADAAG ( Americans with disability  design guidelines), which is a federal regulation. NFPA 101 is only one of the many requirements/regulation that need to be met.

RE: Area of Refuge

An area of refuge is a stage of the total egress process. NFPA 101 section A.3.3.14 "...recognizes any floor in a building ptotected throughout by an approved, supervised automatic sprinkler syatem is an area of refuge". Thus if any floor is not protected; it requires an area of refuge. An area of refuge can be a protected elevator lobby, a protected area within an enclosed stair or another room or building protected by a barrier.
