catia v5r16 - reposition paste link sketches

(OP)
hello all,
i want to re-use a sketch. i am drawing a frame from channel iron. the frame will have around 7 different lenghts of channel in it. the sketch i have copied and pasted special with link. now, how can i constrain this sketch so it sits in different positions, planes, angles, etc. any ideas?
thanks in advance, gary.

Which workbench are you using?

at the moment i'm using "part design". i thought of using the translate\rotate\symmetry etc. but did not realy want to keep the full history of what i was doing to the sketch. in "part design", sometimes i "copy" and "paste special" as "result with link". then i can simply use my compass to move and rotate and then constrain it. this way it does not keep the history, but just the linked solid and the constraints as added. i was hoping i could do the same her.

if you use positioned sketches you can "change sketch support" on the child sketch to move it to a different location, but the geometry in the sketch will be linked to the parent sketch.

RE: catia v5r16 - reposition paste link sketches

There's a Structures workbench that is specifically for what you want to do.

But, if you're using the Part Design workbench, I suggest you make individual CATPart files for each, unique piece of channel. And then use the Assembly Design workbench to assemble the channels into whatever positions they belong.

You could use New From to quickly make the channels from the first one, and just change the length. (You could also use PowerCopy or Design Tables)

In your first post, you asked about reusing the sketch. You could use a 'skeleton' technique where you have the master sketch in a special CATPart file, and then copy&paste with link that sketch into all the CATPart files for each channel with the same shape. This will provide associative links - change the master sketch, and all the linked sketches will follow.
