8mm tube nails?
8mm tube nails?
(OP)
Hello, I'm looking for help trying to detail a structural steel job. The engineer of record has called out "8mm tube nails" for a plate attaching to a concrete wall. My question is, has anyone ever heard of these, and if so what are they and where can I find them?
The detail is attached, any help at all in trying to figure this out would be appreciated as I'm not getting any from the professionals of record on the job.

RE: 8mm tube nails?
That aside I've heard several fastening devices call tube nails. Here a just a couple from Concrete Fasteners and a couple from Simplex, Tube-Lok for information.
Concrete Fasteners has several drive-in anchors that might fit the bill.

Often called tube nails.

On these anchors, have you seen them called out before, or have you just heard of them in passing? I'm just wondering if I'm going to see more of these in use soon.
Thanks again.

realsteel: you lucked out checking here!
Too many regional differences in what we call stuff- usually by a tradename...
RE: 8mm tube nails?
The only time I've seen them called out was on a bill of materials.
I have an advantage as I check in with my friend at a fastener supply company and in the discussions over coffee with the countermen about different requests and the word tube nails comes up every great once in a while. It is one of the descriptions where you have to ask most of the time as to the end use. Take the case for the Simplex line where if one would ask for a Simplex nail 99% of the time you would get the plastic washered one for anchoring roofing felt. As for the concrete anchors the requested names go all over the place. You always hope one brings in a sample.
It was just a short time ago that we talked about generating glossary or list of terms used in the fastener industry. It wouldn't sell but would be a good advertisement.
RE: 8mm tube nails?
I think you have to go back to the EOR with a request for information. Because the fasteners are 8 mm, I doubt that the anchors referenced by unclesyd are the ones intended, although that is a good try.
You are not connecting to concrete, but rather to AAC, an entirely different material. I can't figure from the detail what is the purpose of the "tubenail" fasteners, so best to ask the designer.

RE: 8mm tube nails?
Personally, with 8 3/4 epoxy anchors right next to the actual load points, I can't see what 4 8mm anchors are going to do. Once those epoxy anchors set up there will be no need for the other tube nails. But, I didn't draw the job so I've got to do what's asked.
Also, if anyone happens to have a good site to read up on AAC construction please let me know. This is the first building I've worked on in my area that has AAC walls, but the school system here is looking to adopt them.
Thanks for all of your help.
RE: 8mm tube nails?
I am sorry an "engineer" has put you in this position. Refusing to answer your question is irresponsible.
As to AAC construction, I have never used it. My only exposure to it was a report I did on a house which was badly cracked. Gave me a bad impression of the material, so I won't be advocating it.
