Bunded Area

Bunded Area

What capacity should a bunded area containing a number of different tanks be able to store? I have heard 110% of the capacity of the largest tank but cannot find it.

Please advise and also state where in which standard I can find this.

Thanks

RE: Bunded Area

Check out NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. Also check out NFPA 395 if it's for tanks less than 1,100 gallons.

RE: Bunded Area

Where is the tank located?  NFPA 30 is an American standard that may or may not apply to your location.

Located in Kenya, East Africa.

99491..

Most storage tanks located in the USA use the 110% criteria for the bund (containment) design. It is incorporated into State statutes and laws.

Some US states also add a "rainfall factor" of about 6 inches to the wall height.

It is also important to consider the bund material (concrete, earth with a memebrane and clay are often used) as well as access to the contained area.

A bund containing a number of tanks of different volumes needs to be designed only for the failure of the largest one.

RE: Bunded Area

Not mentioned is that the 110% is based on volume of largest tank; also realize that this large tank would contain a certain amount of leaked product, so your calculations have to take that into account.
US EPA requires 110% (enforcable) or largest tank volume + 25 years,24 hours storm event (non-enforcable)
