Generators for power plant

Generators for power plant

(OP)
anyone know the pros and cons of using low voltage generators vs. medium voltage generators in a continuous operation [run 24/7] to serve as a power plant?

looking for which type has a better record of up time and less maintenance.

thanks.

should have mentioned these are for diesel gens.

RE: Generators for power plant

What size and rating are you looking for?

2MW - 2.5MW range.

MV generator windings are probably less tolerant of abuse. I don't know of any particular reliability concerns of one vs. the other.

I'd also consider the maintenance staff. Are they familiar with medium voltage equipment, advanced protection systems, etc. that medium voltage would require?

With low voltage you may have issues with excessive fault current if more than a few are on one bus.

You might consider LV generators with step-up GSUs and MV switchgear.

RE: Generators for power plant

Hi.
It's difficult Q.
We need more info. SLD, are genset will work as island or in co-generation with grid, how much genset's, etc..etc.
We had a lot of threads on the topic here, please search.
Best Regards.

the setup will be between 6-8 sets of 2- 2.5 MW gens operating as an island.

RE: Generators for power plant

Thanks for additional info.
From my point of view, in such application: MV generators w/o GSU.
But ofcourse, we will see lot of additional opinions.
Best Regards.

RE: Generators for power plant

Consider your grounding arrangements. I'd likely go with an MV set at 3.3kV or 4.16kV if the grounding scheme allowed the earth fault level to be kept low to protect the stator core. An LV generator + GSU transformer affords the opportunity to implement the best protection for your generator, especially if you are running a low resistance earthing scheme on the MV system. Keep away from anything over 10kV to avoid partial discharge, which is a headache you can well do without.
