Material selection - Electric HX

Material selection - Electric HX

(OP)
I am working on a system that will require a resistance heating element to aid in freeze protecting a seawater tank.  There is no flow (static fluid).  I need to slect a sheath alloy to be directly immersed in the fluid. The available materials are 316SS, 316LSS, Incoly 840, Incoloy 800, and Inconel 600.  Are any of these suitable for use in a direct immersion application (I need something to last about 18 months before replacement)? Also, we are only able to mount the heating element by a 316 or 316L ss flange.  Thanks!

RE: Material selection - Electric HX

all the materials that you've mentioned in contact with seawater can be affected by corrosion, pitting,crevice.. it depends on the operating temperature..

RE: Material selection - Electric HX

Even at low temp, if the water is static all of these alloys will suffer crevice corrosion.  You need to be dealing a 6%Mo stainless or a similar grade designed for use in seawater.
