dimensioning ellipse, rho?
dimensioning ellipse, rho?
(OP)
hi guys,
I have a question pertaining to conic arcs. In pro E when i create an engineered drawing containing a conic it dimensions with rho value.
my question is, do machinists understand this value? What is the best way to express this dimension in terms the machinist can easily understand?
sorry for my ignorance, im new to this.
THANKS IN ADVANCE,
0CHRIS

RE: dimensioning ellipse, rho?
Two most readily grasped methods are major & minor diameter or by major diameter plus degrees off normal axis (like ellipse templates are classified, viewing circle at off angle).
RE: dimensioning ellipse, rho?
Well, fast forward a few days to after the contractor had left and, no the machinist didn't have a clue what to do with the rho value and we had to redo the drawing.
So, I'd probably go Max & Min as well as a note explicitly saying ELLIPSE so it's not confused with some kind of ovoid (is that the word I mean?) of 2 tangent radii. Ticks other technique should work but I've always seen max min on drawings.

You could ask over on the Pro E forum forum554: PTC: Pro/ENGINEER. You might want to link back to this post by pasting the above thread number thread404-235593: dimensioning ellipse, rho?.
