help with 6g welding test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(OP)
hi guys looking for help and advice, doing 8"6g(carbon steel)welding test 14/01 tig root, low hi fill and cap,i have been multi coded in the past(15 yrs ago-babcocks) but i need advice.i did a mock test at my work an the lack of pen at the bottom 6-8 oclock and 6-4oclock is giving me cause for concern.i used to set up with a 4mm root gap 2.4mm wire keeping the wire fed in at the back of the pool but when i tried this it was  a disaster i know it should be like riding a bike but unfortunately i keep falling off,i know in my mind(i think) what to do but i need help guys please!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: help with 6g welding test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually use a root opening the same as the diameter of the filler metal. Then again, I find the best results is achieved with a 0.03 inch root face and no root opening works when using GTAW.

Best regards - Al

RE: help with 6g welding test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tigboy, I would use a 3mm root opening. As you know the GTAW process takes some very good hand eye coordination. A little more practice and your old ways will come back to you and you should pass. Good luck!
