Alternative to 420 Stainless Steel

Alternative to 420 Stainless Steel

(OP)
Hi Guys.

I am new. Be kind please.

I am not sure if this is the correct category for the posting. But it is boiler related.

The current boiler baffle plate in used at the company site ((Australia) is of 420 Stainless Steel. From the thermography inspections done in the last couple of months, several hot spot are starting to develop.

I planning to replace the 420 Stainless Steel Plates. However, the quantity is too small that no one wants to supply us. Even contacting suppliers from the US comes to the same result.

Are there any alternative to the 420 Stainless Steel? I have read of the possibility of using 416 or 440C as alternatives. But I have no direct experience in using them.

Any feedback is appreciated.

RE: Alternative to 420 Stainless Steel

We always try to be kind here at ET. What is the application of this plate in the boiler? A flue gas baffle? The 420 stainless steel is probably specified because of the higher carbon content for hardness. I would check with the folks below for either 420.

Another option is to use abrasion resistant plate in lieu of 420 stainless steel IF the metal temperatures are low enough (below 600 deg F) to avoid tempering (softening).
