Mechanical Seal Failures

Mechanical Seal Failures

Mechanical Seal Failures

(OP)
I was fortunate to investigate two recent mechnaical seal fauilures and discovered that the failure was due to electrostatic discharge between the seal face. The discharge resulted in premature failure. It was discovered that the seal acted as a grounding device with the seal face being the high resistance spot. Interesting.

RE: Mechanical Seal Failures

sjerrier!

Interesting but not very clear. Can you elaborate?

Regards,

Truth: Even the hardest of the problems will have atleast one simple solution. Mine may not be one.

RE: Mechanical Seal Failures

re. shaft seal problems

I have been into the same problems. At that time the pumps were operated through frequency converters. After some investigations I found out that this is quite common, and that special attention should be paid to the wiring and earthing. Motor manufacturers do normally have pretty much information in their written documentation.

Best regards

RE: Mechanical Seal Failures

Now I'm curious whether this problem would be limited to machines driven from electronic drives.

sjerrier - was your pump driven from a motor with variable speed drive?

What are symptoms... noticeable arc marks?

RE: Mechanical Seal Failures

Can you please elaborate the problem. It is not clear. The type and service of the pump u were using.

Regards.
